The 2015 Black Label from Wynns, which debuted way back in 1954 but only sported a black label from 1965, is aged for 18 months in 19% new oak. It has a ravishing bouquet of black cherries, menthol, lavender and pitted black olives, well defined and displaying just the right amount of plushness. The palate offers vibrant red fruit laced with white pepper and clove, plus touches of orange peel. There’s plenty of vibrancy here, and hints of cough candy toward the well-balanced, fresh finish. This is a delightful Cabernet Sauvignon that is à point but will have no problem aging for another 20 years.

Vines an average of 44 years old, on the famous terra rossa. Picked 18 March to 14 April, Fermented on skins for 10 to 32 days and aged for 18 months in French barriques (18% new). I'm sure I remember when this cost £4.99. Mid garnet and obviously mature to judge from the colour. Nicely nuanced and complex on the nose. Sweet palate entry counterbalanced by some edgy balsam notes. Really subtle, even ethereal. Great lift. Reminds me of the fine Napa Cabs of the 1970s. Tannins well in retreat though they make their presence felt with a little grip on the very end. Much more developed than a bordeaux 2015 at this price – but so what? (JR)
