The 2018 Clos la Madeleine is ripe and exuberant on the nose, offering red plum, mulberry and blood orange scents; earthier notes develop with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with dark berries, that white pepper that I noticed out of barrel not accentuated in bottle. Quite spicy toward the end, although it just misses a little depth on the granular finish, I suspect because I tasted it so soon after bottling. Give it two or three years in bottle and I am sure it will improve.

Coming from the Moueix team, the 2018 Clos La Madeleine checks in as 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc from a tiny vineyard (2.3 hectares) on the hillsides of Saint-Emilion, near Belair-Monange. This vineyard was purchased by the Moueix family in 2017, and the 2018 saw malolactic fermentation in barrel and was raised in 40% new French oak. It has classic Saint-Emilion minerality as well as a great nose of blackcurrants, black cherries, chocolate, crushed stone, and graphite. This carries to a powerful, medium to full-bodied 2018 with chalky tannins, terrific mid-palate depth, and a juicy, lively, complex style that keeps you coming back to the glass. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following 15-20 years. It's the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted, and I expect the best is still to come.

The 2018 Clos La Madeleine is rich, creamy and expansive just as it was from barrel. Crushed red berries, flowers, mint, blood orange build as this stylish, mid-weight Saint-Émilion shows off its considerable charm. Silky tannins round things out in style. Clos Madeleine is understated and shy at the moment, but it has a ton to offer.

The 2018 Clos la Madeleine was acquired by J-P Moueix in 2017. It has quite a bold bouquet with upfront red plum and cranberry fruit, pressed iris and light blood orange scents. The palate is smooth and sensual on the entry. Dark berry fruit mix with white pepper and clove, perhaps more complex and involving than anticipated. The finish feels very harmonious and assured, fanning out in leisurely fashion. Superb.
