Tasted at the Denis Mortet Chambertin vertical, the 2001 Chambertin Grand Cru is rather oaky on the nose like the 2000, hints of cooked meat, wild mushroom coming through, a little incense, just a little static at the moment. Fortunately, the palate is much better. It has a freshness and vitality about it that is very appealing, blood orange and citrus fruit injecting life here. It gently builds in the mouth and while it does not possess the detail of recent vintages, I noticed how it improved in the glass, gaining more and more harmony and delineation. A fine Pinot Noir if not a great Chambertin. Tasted January 2016.

Full, bright red. Brooding, very ripe aromas of black fruits, licorice, graphite and gunflint, all lifted by a subtle oaky perfume. Big, broad, rich and okay, with powerful, dense black fruit flavors and excellent length and thrust. Five or six years in bottle should bring greater refinement as the wine loses some of its baby fat.

Full red-ruby. Perfumed nose of sappy berries, smoked meat and minerals. Highly aromatic and expressive in the mouth; already offers superb finesse. Impresses more with its complexity and perfume than with its power. Finishes very long and subtle, with firm tannic grip.
