The 2012 Pian del Ciampolo is a blend of Sangioveto, Canaiolo and Colorino that opens to a beautifully luminous and light ruby color. This is a fantastic wine - the kind you want to thirstily wash down with fresh pasta topped with rabbit ragù and crushed juniper. Foodies will find its approachability irresistible. White cherry, crushed pepper and cranberry appear on the bouquet and the wines delivers a fresh dose of acidity that will cut straight through cheese toppings or butter. It’s not necessarily an age-worthy proposition nor is it overtly complex, but it certainly hits all the right buttons.

The 2012 Pian del Ciampolo is a pretty, mid-weight wine. Red stone fruits, rose petals and cinnamon are some of the notes that meld together in the glass. The 2012 appears to be built for near-term drinking, so readers should not wait too long here. In 2012, all of the rain arrived at the end of the growing season, making for a very complicated harvest.

The legendary Montervertine estate was created by the Manetti family in 1967 and is best known for its iconic pure Sangiovese, Le Pergole Torte. Based in Chianti but with the wines labelled as IGT Toscana, these elegant wines are rightfully some of Tuscany and Italy’s most sought-after.
