The 2014 Le Volte (70% Merlot, 15% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon) shows some of the weakness of the vintage - whereas the top shelf wines from Ornellaia in this difficult year are absolutely impressive. Le Volte seems to have suffered from less generous fruit selection. The bouquet shows moderate intensity with dried cherry, some distant spice and toasted almond. This is an easy drinking red to pair with your favorite dish at your local trattoria. Drink it up within the next two years. Some 450,000 bottles are produced.

The 2014 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia is a solid wine to drink now and over the next few years. Sweet tobacco, licorice, dried cherries, game and earthiness are laced into the soft, open-knit finish. There are no underripe or green flavors, but not much depth either. The 2014 is best enjoyed over the next year or two.
About the producer
Based in the foothills of Bolgheri, Ornellaia is one of the original Super Tuscans, making some of Italy’s finest Cabernet blends. Created by Lodovico Antinori, today the estate is owned by the Frescobaldi family, which also owns sibling property Masseto.
