The 2019 Malbec Piedras Viejas Terrazas hails from El Challao, Las Heras, Mendoza, and spent 14 months in French 225 and 160 liters barrels. This Malbec is made with grapes from an isolated vineyard in the Andean foothills planted at a height of 5,250 feet. It’s dark purple in the glass. A complex, floral nose of violets, lavender and country herbs accompanied by fresh plum and sour cherry arises over elegant oaky aromas. Juicy in the mouth with a little extract, the freshness injects energy while it’s quite concentrated with good grip and a finish of thyme and herbs. The interesting thing about this wine is how it represents the potential of a large and mostly unexplored terroir.
