From a complicated vintage that started with serious spring frost, followed by a warm and humid summer and a nice late season allowing lots of botrytis to develop, the amber-orange colored 1995 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann opens with an elegant, refined and balsamic/malty nose of stewed apricots and pumpernickel. Refined and elegant on the palate, this is a dry, vital, aromatic, beautifully fruity and then charmingly sweetish Rangen with dried peach and stone fruit aromas and remarkably fine phenolic and mineral grip. The wine is savory and mouthwatering but still young and tastes sweeter as it will in 10 years. Although the vintage brought the smallest crop on the domaine ever, the 1995 is another excellent vintage for the Clos Saint-Urbain. Bottled with 11.7% alcohol. 13.3 grams per liter of residual sugar and a remarkably high total acidity of 7.3 grams per liter. Tasted as part of the large Rangen vertical in Wachenheim, Pfalz, in November 2023.

Orange in color, the 1995 Riesling Grand Cru Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain shows dried apricots, apricots skins along with toasted apples, apricots and some orange flavors on the nose. Piquant and grippy on the fruit-intense (dried fruit aromas again), slightly thick and round palate, this is a delicately structured, rather dry VT style that should be drunk in the next ten years.
