Score 90+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Nov 2013

Good bright medium red. Plum, redcurrant, strawberry, mint, spices, earth and dried flowers on the nose, plus a whiff of leather. Tactile and rich, displaying good medicinal reserve to the flavors of red fruits, chocolate and herbs. Shows a slight dryness with air but this is not particularly austere. With its depth of flavor and dusty tannins, this is built to age.

The 2009 Barbaresco is an attractive wine to drink over the next few years. This is an especially big, rich wine for the vintage. Sweet tobacco, leather, spices, menthol and dried cherries wrap around the incisive, powerful finish. The aromas and flavors are already a touch forward, which suggests the 2009 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later.

In true Nebbiolo fashion, the 2009 Barbaresco brings out all kinds of delicate nuances with licorice, tar, anisette and pressed rose. The wine shows elegance and nicely firming tannins that are smooth and fine. Pio Cesare has done a good job of taming down some of ripeness of the warm 2009 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023. Pio Cesare is what I call a “lighthouse” winery. Steadfast and standing tall among the rest, it floods the landscape with inspiration and light for a slew of smaller, boutique wineries looking to find their way. Among the most historic brands in Alba, Pio Cesare has worked hard to promote Barolo and the territory of the Langhe across the globe. Their tireless efforts have been instrumental in creating a unified Barolo identity. Importer: Maisons Marques & Domaines; Oakland, CA; tel. (510) 286-2000
