This wine was born in an infamously hot vintage. However, it quite surprisingly holds up its freshness and its dark fruit aromas. The Masi 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Costasera is defined by toasted notes of scorched earth and spice, and perhaps the finish is a bit leaner and shorter than we've seen on some of the other wines in this retrospective. It displays an open-knit approach with a thick, grainy texture.

The 2003 Amarone Classico Costasera presents a brooding nose along with notes of tobacco, earthiness, smoke and dark fruit that flow from the glass. It offers excellent length on the palate although the tannins could use a little more polish. This full-bodied rustic Amarone should drink well over the next few years.
