Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru les Combettes 2011 from Sauzet has a very composed bouquet with the minerality shining through, exuding great tension and allowing the aromatics that speak of a place. The palate is well balanced with a crisp line of acidity. This is well structured with judiciously integrated oak, touches of spicy citrus fruit and great tension toward the finish that fans out beautifully. Excellent.

Pale, bright, green-tinged yellow. Sexy aromas of white nectarine and minerals complicated by oak notes of vanilla and toast. Dense, pure and precise, with a distinctly sappy, tactile quality to the savory flavors of white stone fruits and crushed rock. This really saturates the palate with flavor and builds on the aftertaste. Superb premier cru with the energy to support a leisurely evolution in bottle.
The 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes is by far the most closed, unyielding of the wines in this range. Today, it is all about power. The expression of fruit is huge on the palate, but it is going to be a few years before all the elements come together in the glass. Readers who enjoy rich, powerful whites will find much to like here, once the wine settles down a bit. Patience is key.
