The 2013 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles 1er Cru, served from magnum, offers slightly rustic black dusky fruit on the nose, a bit of mulch compromising the purity of the fruit. Likewise the palate is marked by rather rough tannin that frames satisfying levels of blackberry and bilberry fruit, though it is missing some finesse and poise on the finish. Tasted at the Bouchard dinner at La Gavroche.

Bright, dark red. Sexy high-toned aromas of candied red fruits, spices and flowers. Plush and sweet in the mouth, conveying a pliant texture and excellent intensity to its red fruit and floral flavors. Well-judged oak contributes complexity without dominating the wine. Spreads out horizontally on the finish, with pungent minerality extending the fruit.

Mid, bright crimson. Invitingly aromatic – more so than all the Bouchard reds so far tasted. Sweet, creamy red cherry with just the right seasoning of oak spice. Deep and rich and smoothly satisfying, balancing creamy texture and final freshness. (JH)

(these vines are now 74 years of age, according to Prost): Bright, dark ruby-red. High-toned, slightly liqueur-like aromas of dark fruits and chocolate mint. Very rich, sweet and chocolatey, with rather exotic flavors of black fruits and cherry pit. Nicely concentrated wine but I wondered about its high-toned character. I'd like to see this one in finished form next year.
