Deep brown in color, the 1993 Hill of Grace shows dried herb characters over notes of dried cherries, earth and pencil lead. Crisp and concentrated, it has firm, chewy tannins and offers a good expression of what fruit remains, even if it is a little under-ripe and lean in the long finish. It is mature. Blackish ruby. A little fragile on the nose but beguiling. Salty and complex. Like floral, diluted treacle – rather delicious! But a weaker than average vintage. (JR)
Looks fully mature. Subdued, very Rhônelike nose (for the first time in this flight!) – or is this the hail damage?!. Nicely integrated, complex bouquet has already developed. Some black pepper. Tastes as though this was one of the less ripe vintages but the result is a very approachable, well mannered wine. Perhaps this is my European background and Australians would be disappointed by its lack of oomph, but this wine offers drinkability and balance. (JR)
