Well-hung smoked meat, violet and chocolate, with a tough grainy tannic feel on the finish. Stops a bit short, perhaps. Interesting nose, but the palate remains somewhat foursquare. Still not quite ready? (RH)

The 1995 Cote Rotie La Landonne is a backward, tart, opaque purple-colored wine that is just beginning to reveal its character. Tannic and rich, with a chocolatey, smoky, black currant/cassis-scented nose, this powerful, impenetrable wine will require cellaring until the turn of the century; drink it over the following 10-12 years.
