The 2009 Pinot Noir Zio Tony Ranch is one of the more exuberant, flashy of the 2009 Pinots. Here the fruit is decidedly opulent, a ripe wine that will appeal most to readers who enjoyed the full-bodied style of Pinot. Layers of fruit build towards the big, effortless finish. A touch of alcohol comes through on the finish, otherwise this is a fine effort.

I tasted a wide range of wines during a recent visit. The 2008 Syrahs, from a challenging vintage, are a bit up and down, but the rest of the wines are all outstanding. As always, these are fairly bold, extroverted wines, but their overall balance is typically superb. Tel. (707) 525-0570

Bright ruby-red. Complex, youthful aromas of red berries, cherry and spicecake. Juicy, penetrating flavors of dark berries and bitter cherry. Firm acids give this densely packed wine clarity and energy. Finishes long, juicy and aromatic, with firm tannins, hints of spicy oak and dried cherry.

Martinelli

Martinelli is a Sonoma benchmark for vineyard-designate bottlings—wines built to highlight how strongly a single site can shape Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Zinfandel. Across the range, the focus stays consistent: small-production bottlings that feel distinctly tied to where they’re grown.
