(from Musigny vines between 10 and 25 years of age): Bright full red. Very reticent but pure aromas of currant, raspberry, pomegranate, menthol and fresh spices; more red than black and a touch medicinal. Densely packed and saline, with knockout inner-mouth perfume of raspberry, pomegranate and crushed stone. Like a junior, and much more accessible, version of Musigny. Impressive energy and rising salty minerality on the very long finish. A great vintage for this bottling.

The 1er Cru is made from young vines in Musigny. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. Long-time oenologist Francois Millet was away during my visit to Burgundy, so I can’t relay his always visually evocative thoughts on recent vintages. At the end of the day, though, these wines need no words; they speak for themselves, and then some. Commercial director Jean-Luc Pepin was kind enough to show me all of the 2010s and 2009s (from bottle), including the seldom seen Bourgogne Blanc. I will report on the 2009s in the April issue. (from young vines in Musigny): Dark, bright red. Aromas and flavors of black cherry, currant, blueberry, licorice and menthol; distinctly darker in character than the village Chambolle. Sweet, dense and energetic, displaying a chewy texture. Really mounts on the tactile aftertaste. This and the village wine had been racked the week before my visit, but the concentration and length of this wine were clear to see.
