Deep ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, licorice and dark chocolate; grew increasingly liqueur-like with aeration. Supple, thick and seamless; fat with flavors of black licorice and mocha. Nicely sweet but could use a bit more verve. Finishes with substantial sweet, building tannins and considerable oak. But there's also strong fruit here. This is the highest in alcohol of these three 2004s, at 15.4%.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Treva’s Vineyard VSR comes from a hillside parcel that produced 240 cases from a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Notes of scorched earth, spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, crushed rocks, and coffee beans emerge from this opulent, dense, rich, terroir-based wine. Filled with character and richness, it should last for 14-16 years. Previously recommended: 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Jake’s Creek Vineyard (90+), 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Treva’s Vineyard VSR (92). Ruby-red. Cassis, spices and menthol on the nose. Juicy, bright and minerally, with a flavor of blackberry nicely lifted by a firm acid spine. Comes across as suppler and fleshier than the 2003 version. Still a bit youthfully aggressive in the early going, but offers more delineation and lift. With its substantial tannic structure, this wine should hold well in bottle.
