Score 89/100 · Drink 2004-2018, Pierre Rovani, Feb 2004

The 2002 Riesling Spatlese Urziger Wurzgarten has powerful minerals in its aromatic profile, a plush, fat, pulp-laden white fruit-dominated character, and a long, tangy mineral-filled finish. It would have merited an outstanding score had a slight pastiness not been detected in the mid-palate. Projected maturity: now-2018. All of Weingut Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben’s wines revealed relatively high levels of CO2 (a natural by-product of fermentation that disappears with time). Readers who find this trait unpleasant should wait 1-2 years before opening any of this estate’s 2002s. Honeysuckle, lemon and strawberry in the nose. Strawberries in cream on the palate, with a striking expression of slate that can only be described as liquid stone. This shares its creamy, custardy textural allure with several of Christoffel's best 2001s. 2 stars.
