Score 92/100 · Drink 2022-2032, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Nov 2022

Showing the balance and finesse of St Julien, majoring on undergrowth, truffle, blackberry, raspberry puree, crushed earth, with a crackle of minerality, this is an excellent 2002 that is ready to drink, just at the very beginning of the plateau, still with further to uncurl. Unusually, I would place this at the same level of quality as the 2001, even if different in character. 50% new oak, a little higher than average at this estate, and a low yield of 39hl/h. Harvest October 2 to 13. Remi di Constanzo technical director.

The 2002 Gloria remains quite dark in colour. It has a tight, rather sullen bouquet that only gradually opens with light liquorice-tinged black fruit, though it lacks a bit of vigour. The palate is medium-bodied with rustic red fruit, very savoury and quite minty, though for me this is missing a bit of typicité - too meaty and feral on the finish. Tasted at the château.

Looks just a little dull. Mild, low-key nose. Could be low-level TCA, because this is so introvert...?  (JR)

Looks quite mature on the rim. Light but well balanced nose. Soft, light hints of milk chocolate but not the most appetising wine without the palate weight to beguile. A little sickly. (JR)

About the producer

Ch. Gloria
Gloria

The modest Ch. Gloria was only created in the 1940s, when Henri Martin – a cooper – purchased some vines. With parcels dotted in amongst the region’s Classed Growths, it produces impressive wines. Today it's managed by Vanessa and Jean Triaud (Henri Martin’s granddaughter and grandson-in-law).
