In the past, I have only been disappointed with the 1983 Suduiraut in the context of a fine Sauternes vintage, but this bottle proved there are better examples out there. The nose displays quince, blood orange and tangerine notes. The palate has better weight than expected but is still a little rough around the edges; however, it does demonstrate more vigour on the finish than previous bottles. Tasted at the 1982 Dinner at Hatched in London.

The 1983 Suduiraut has long been a disappointing wine in the context of a great Sauternes vintage. The nose is simple with mandarin and barley sugar scents, lacking the joie-de-vivre of the best Sauternes in this vintage. The palate is just about balanced with tangy lemon rind and marmalade notes, but it feels a bit scrawny with age and I suspect that the finish will soon dry out. Tasted from a bottle from my personal cellar.

This looks to be a good Suduiraut. A medium golden color, with a very honeyed, rich, floral bouquet, this full-bodied wine is not as profound as the other 1983s. Sweet, with fine honeyed flavors, this is an elegant, graceful Suduiraut with plenty of character. However, given the vintage, I had expected even more. Anticipated maturity: Now-2005. Last tasted, 3/90.
