Good medium red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, flowers, menthol and exotic spices, plus a balsamic whiff of olive oil. Then sappy and saline in the mouth, with its subtly sweet dark berry and faint herb flavors showing lovely vinosity and intensity. Not broad or particularly expansive but finishes with surprisingly refined tannins and palate-saturating length without any heaviness. My memory is that this wine began more tannic but today it relies more on its firm acidity for structure and freshness. (13.5% alcohol; September 21 harvest; 36 h/h; 3.37 pH)

The 1993 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs is a beautiful wine that exudes purity on the nose, slightly tertiary in style (a facet that seems to have been accentuated with bottle age). The palate retains that exquisite mulberry fruit tinged with blueberry and subtle bay leaf notes, although I am parsimonious with my score because I often feel that it lacks vivacity on the finish. It continues to drink well, but I do not believe it aspires to be the greatest Clos des Ducs.

Guffens of Dom Verget said about 1993, we were reminded: ‘it only rained once in September but it lasted for three weeks’. Harvest 21 September, yield 36 hl/ha, pH 3.37. Dense and quite rich. Very intense. A real explosion of flavour of the palate. Lots to chew on but lots of beautifully harmonious fruit to counterbalance and immensely long on the palate. Literally minutes! (JR)
