Score 95/100 · Drink 2006-2020, Pierre Rovani, Oct 2002

The flamboyant 2000 Tokay-Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl explodes with the scents of juicy peaches, spices, and apricots. Possessing awesome depth, this medium to full-bodied effort is crammed with minerals and poached pears. Most of the botrytis-affected bunches were sorted out so there is only a trace of noble rot in this exceptional, virtually dry wine's pure character. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020. Olivier Humbrecht describes 2000 as "a year of excellent ripeness where the key to success was sorting out the bad rot prior to harvesting." To accomplish this, Humbrecht sent out teams to go through every parcel, dropping whatever bunches had been infected with sour rot. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht's harvest lasted 6 weeks, with one-fourth being accomplished between September 19 and October 5th, and the remaining three-fourths picked by October 31st. Aromatic nose of minerals and spices. Less sweet than the Rotenberg (about 8 g/l r.s., vs. 14), and thus more penetrating, even somewhat austere. I find this a bit topheavy with alcohol (15%). Leaves a dry impression on the finish, which betrays a hint of harshness. The only question mark I have about a few of the Z-H VTs and SGNs in 2000: is there a sufficient concentration of acidity to balance the sugar and alcohol?
