Youthful deep red. The darkest vintage on the nose to this point, offering brooding scents of black fruits, violet and menthol. At once sweet and penetrating, with its almost liqueur-like dark fruit flavors cut by mineral-driven vinosity. This very densely packed wine finishes with substantial chewy, tongue-dusting yet integrated tannins and alluring saline character. This strikes me as just short of a long plane of peak maturity. If you open a bottle soon, pair it with roasted game birds or chevreuil . (14% alcohol; 39 hl/h; 3.5 pH; harvested on September 18)

The 2005 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru from Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg is still a baby, but its quality is clearly apparent as it wafts from the glass with notes of bonfire, ripe plums, wild berries, incense and a spicy framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and complete, with an ample chassis of rich tannins, a cool and reserved core of fruit and excellent depth and length. Anyone lucky enough to own a few bottles should cellar this with confidence for another decade so it can reveal all its plenitude.

Good medium red with ruby highlights. Explosive aromas of red fruits, blueberry, minerals and flowers. Fully ripe yet dry, with superb energy to the sappy dark berry flavors: zinfandel and pinot lovers will go for this! Boasts terrific precision and class, finishing with very harmonious tannins and compelling lingering perfume. Almost too good today, but I suspect this will shut down in the bottle soon.

Full red-ruby. Black fruits, violet and minerals on the vibrant nose. Sweet, dense and powerful, with superb energy and lift to the fleshy dark fruit and mineral flavors. This also explodes on the back, showing a tangy, sappy, yet creamy character and terrific breadth of tannins. This solidly structured wine will need a decade in the cellar.
