The 1985 Monte Bello is one gorgeous wine. The bouquet bursts from the glass with vibrant red berry fruit, light cigar smoke, wilted rose petals, and blood orange aromas that seem to gain intensity in the glass. The palate is reminiscent of the same vintage in Bordeaux insofar as it is blessed with a sensual, corpulent body that caresses the senses. Beautifully balanced, still fresh with a cashmere finish, this is nigh irresistible Monte Bello cruising at the peak of its powers.

Beautifully mature, and with a character that rather mirrors the affable character of 1985 red bordeaux, just as the firmer 1970 Monte Bello mirrored that of Bordeaux’s 1970s. Lifted molten fruit with virtually no tannin in evidence and a strong imprint of balsam. A treat, and mellower than the magnum in this Monte Bello vertical . (JR)

93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot. ‘The ten distinct blocks of the Monte Bello Vineyard are made separately. After secondary fermentation, we begin a series of blind tastings to determine which are of the quality and character we require for our estate wine. In 1985, 45% of the production was not included in the Monte Bello. (These softer wines will be released as Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet.)’ From magnum. Paler garnet than the younger vintages and it smells a bit of California redwood. Very unusual without the intensity and freshness of other vintages and a bit pinched on the finish. Just a bit jagged and unintegrated. (JR)

Pale ruby, tawny edging, plenty of vigour through the core of the wine, tobacco notes on the edge. Evening in the rose garden, this is filled with soft melted tar and tobacco notes, still with grip and understated power, gourmet blackcurrant pastille notes with waves of patisserie creme, earth and iron, a delicious wine that is evolved but still delivering. Tasting again after an hour and there is still soft power here. Paul Draper winemaker.
