The 1994 Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru has a very Germanic, much more Riesling-like bouquet with petrolly scents filtering through the light tropical aromas. It's not as defined as the Heimbourg tasted alongside. The palate lacks a bit of acidic bite. There's fine depth, and it's slightly waxy in texture; however, it just misses some clarity on the finish. Not bad, but not the best that Olivier Humbrecht made this year. Tasted blind at Olivier Bernard's "4" dinner at Domaine de Chevalier.

Picked after glorious October days on the 10th and 17th at 98° Oechsles (so with little noble rot), the amber-golden, almost orange colored 1994 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann offers a deep and concentrated as well as spicy/flinty bouquet of wild fur, ashes, crushed salts and dried apricots. On the palate, this is an elegant, refined and saline Rangen with dense and finely concentrated fruit and a long and intense finish that reveals fine tannin bitters. Bottled with 13.6% alcohol with 7.9 grams per liter of residual sugar and lively acidity. Natural cork. Tasted as part of the large Rangen vertical in Wachenheim, Pfalz, in November 2023. Humbrecht also produced a Vendange Tardive that year from even riper grapes that were picked the same day at 105° Oechsle and stopped fermenting with 40 grams per liter of residual sugar and 13% alcohol.

Magnum. Cloudy and ambitious Zind Humbrecht style. Just a bit gingery and edgy and bacterial. Some botrytis. A little severe. (JR)
