Moderately saturated medium red. Knockout nose combines red and dark fruits, menthol and smoky minerality, with exhilarating high notes of floral and spice oils. Began equally complex and powerfully mineral-driven in the mouth, with superb focus and energy to its dense flavors, but quickly went into a shell in the glass. This extremely young, taut and utterly palate-staining Musigny should be a classic with 10 or 15 years of bottle age.

The 2009 Musigny is totally weightless. Rose petals, sweet red berries and spices float from the glass as the wine blossoms on the palate. Sweet, textured and expansive, the Musigny impresses for the way it is both intense and ethereal. The finish is long, striking and unforgettable even if the Musigny is surprisingly a bit less expressive than the Bonnes Mares today. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. I tasted an impressive range of wines with Jacques Lardiere and his successor Frederic Barnier, who is slated to take over when Lardiere retires at the end of 2012. Jadot makes a mind-bending number of wines, but I limited myself to the best 35 or so examples. In 2009 Jadot began harvesting on September 6. All of the reds were made from 100% destemmed fruit. Maceration times varied from wine to wine, but according to Lardiere all of the wines were made with essentially the same approach. Lardiere is another of the producers who compares 2009 to 1959, and believes the wines will age well because of their density of fruit and minerality. Many of the estate’s own vineyards are farmed biodynamically, but of course Jadot also sources a significant amount of wine from other growers that is not necessarily from biodynamically farmed vineyards. Medium red. Subdued aromas of blueberry and caramel; showing more oak today than the Bonnes-Mares. Then large-scaled, broad and quite dry, with terrific calcaire lift to its black cherry and mineral flavors. Showing much less nuance today than the Bonnes-Mares but this is still a baby and hiding its inherent energy. Finishes classically dry and very long.
