The 2002 Champagne Corne Bautray Disgorgement Tardif has a deep yellow hue and offers a rounded nose with aromas of Meyer lemon marmalade. The palate is full and inviting and gains in intensity, with a savory flourish, a broad structure, wonderful concentration, and sapid salinity. With a touch of hazelnut and citrus oils on the long finish, it takes on an almost iron richness, coming from a Chardonnay site that’s normally used for red wine. This is not going to slow down any time soon. 500 bottles were produced.

The 2002 Brut Dizy Corne Bautray is all wild flowers, honey, mint and dried fruit. Six months ago, the 2002 was big and broad-shouldered, but since then it has found a more feminine and graceful side as well. The weight and richness of this 50 year-old parcel comes through beautifully in vivid aromas and flavors that are totally seductive. The Corne Bautray is a wonderfully complete wine that changes constantly in the glass, a quality that will fascinate readers lucky enough to track the wine down for many, many years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. I have to say, I was totally blown away by the wines I tasted with proprietor Jean-Herve Chiquet at Jacquesson this year. I can’t think of another estate in Champagne that has so successfully transformed itself in just a handful of years. Most Champagne fans are familiar with the house’s 700-series NV wines, which remain absolutely delicious, fairly priced and relatively easy to find. Over the last ten years so, Jacquesson has also stepped up their program of single-vineyard wines. Quantities are tiny and prices are high, but these are now some of the most compelling wines in the entire region. If you haven’t tasted the Jacquesson wines lately, you owe it to yourself to do so. The 2002 Brut Dizy – Corne Bautray flows across the palate with layers of expressive Chardonnay fruit, spices, flowers, pastry and hazelnut. The Dizy – Corne Bautray is a totally fascinating wine. The 50 year-old vines along with vinification and aging in oak give the wine considerable richness, which allows the non-dosage style to come through beautifully. This is an implosive, huge Champagne loaded with class and pedigree. I loved it.
