Tasting notes
The 2019 Rosso is a superb representation of the special terroir that makes this wine, with really attactive sapidity from the clay, magnesium and manganese soils and a distinct minerality that must hail from the small component of Montosoli in the blend. It offers a bright and aromatic nose with violets, cherry, hints of raspberry and a balsamic note, as well as a touch of tobacco and vanilla. The excellent growing season in 2019 has created a wine that combines exuberance with freshness and well-balanced acidity.

The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino has taken on a hard red candy note in its bouquet that mixes with peppery rose, licorice and wild strawberries. It’s soothingly seductive and classic in feel, as purple-toned inner florals mix with mineral-tinged berries and spices. Sweet tannins linger yet don’t get in the way, as the 2019 literally buzzes with residual energy, while tapering off with an inner earthiness and hints of cherry pits. I expect a long and enjoyable development over time, as this Rosso di Montalcino still aches for a bit more cellaring.
The Canalicchio di Sopra 2019 Rosso di Montalcino is a balanced wine with pretty purity and freshness. This estate does a great job with its Rosso and has believed in this category of wine even when others were less enthusiastic. That loyalty shows here in this confident and authentic wine that aspires to ease-of-drinking, acidity and bright primary fruit.
Sweet cherries and berries with some walnut and orange peel. Medium-bodied, fresh and vivid. Lightly bitter finish. Drink now.
