The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a pure, seductive bouquet of red cherry, kirsch, orange sorbet and light marmalade scents, all very defined and focused. The well-balanced palate is fresh and lively, offering grippy tannin, blood orange and a splash of balsamic toward the second half. Maybe the terroir does not peer through as much as Grivot or Lamarche's Clos de Vougeot, yet it is a thoroughly enjoyable, well made Clos de Vougeot that seems to have a zest for life. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is the one wine from a contracted parcel that the domaine has complete autonomy over for the next ten years, ergo, it is farmed biodynamically like the rest of the vines. It has a vivacious bouquet with redcurrant jelly, maraschino and blood orange with fine mineralité interwoven throughout. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation, supple tannin, a touch of savoriness towards the finish with impressive persistence. This must surely be located in a propitious sector of the famous walled vineyard: it is an outstanding Clos de Vouget.

Cask sample. First vintage – they have a 10-year lease from 2015, an area on the mid slope. Organic certified since 2005. They buy grapes but are involved in the vineyard management. They do the picking and call it Comte on the label rather than Domaine. Rather high toned and heady. Rather marked acidity with a bit less fruit concentration on the mid palate than the norm at this address. Slightly inky. A good start. (JR)
