Dark, earthy, only slightly fading in color and pleasantly mature in the glass, the 1999 Brunello di Montalcino wafts up with an array of crushed autumn leaves, underbrush and dried black cherries. This is plush upon entry with cooling minerality and brisk acidity, adding lift as sweet spice combines with tart red wild berry and a mineral tinge toward the close. The 1999 remains wonderfully fresh through the finish, also slightly grippy, as a resonance of silty tannins lingers and sour citrus fades. In 1999, Il Marroneto was using both their parcels in Madonna della Grazia as well as the three hectare parcel that today informs the Brunello Annata. While this is undoubtedly mature, it’s also holding on quite well.

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino opens to an attractive garnet hue with darkened signs of age at the rim. The bouquet delivers mature aromas of smoke and ash, with cured meat, licorice and balsam herb at the back. It shows a pretty evolution and faithfully reflects the aromatic aging trajectory of Brunello. There’s a touch of grittiness on the finish followed by dusty, dried pine wood sensations. Drink: 2014-2022.

Good deep red. Tobacco and a weedy nuance on the nose. Offers good texture but comes across today as tough and clenched, with somewhat pinched inky and medicinal flavors. Currently shows limited nuance and finishes a bit narrow, with fine but drying tannins.
