The 1996 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata is easily the best of Scavino's 1996 Barolos. A gorgeous, sumptuous wine that speaks to the era in which it was made, the 1996 still possesses notable depth and intensity. Ripe dark fruit, smoke, chocolate and sweet French oak meld together in a racy, fleshy Barolo that is showing beautifully today.

Scavino produced one of the great wines of this classic year, the 1996 Barolo Rocche dell Annunziata. The color is a healthy dark ruby. The nose offers scents of smoky charcoal, licorice, pain grille, black cherries, incense, tobacco, and leather. Full-bodied and massive, with superb balance, nicely integrated acidity and tannin, and a finish that goes on for nearly a minute. It is a profound Barolo to drink now and over the next two decades. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including Michael Skurnik, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300, Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. The 1996 Rocche dell'Annunziata (3-liter) shows the darker, more masculine side of this wine's personality. It is a deep, brooding Barolo with notes of smoke, tar, licorice and dark fruit that gradually emerge from the glass. Like Scavino's other 1996s, the Rocche is just starting to show tertiary nuances and it promises to offer immensely rewarding drinking for years to come.
