Score 92/100 · Drink 2013-2019, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2007

Antinori's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne presents a dark expression of Sangiovese. This deeply-colored Brunello is made in a round, supple style with dark cherries, violets, tobacco and earthiness. It offers notable concentration in a fairly international style, with building but finessed tannins on the finish.

Red-ruby. Musky aromas of dark cherry, earth, mocha and game. Dense, lively and a tad reduced, with focused flavors of dark berries, dark cherry, leather, cola, menthol and minerals. Finishes with substantial tongue-coating tannins that avoid coming off as hard. This boasts very good extract and weight, but I'm not sure I would have picked it as sangiovese.
