The 2005 Barolo Villero is a big, powerful wine with the ample frame and broad shoulders that are its signatures. As always, the Villero is not an easy Barolo, but rather a wine built on structure and intensity that still needs time to start resolving. Hints of lavender, spice, new leather and dark stone fruits are fused into the explosive, resonant finish. This classically austere Barolo will require patience and an affinity for tense, powerful wines, but it is a real beauty.

The 2005 Barolo Villero is ridiculously great. All sorts of cinnamon, cloves, menthol and other balsamic nuances take center stage. The dark fruit is marvelously radiant, open and expressive, with superb density and richness. The tannins are of course firm for a wine of this age, but that doesn't get in the way of what is a totally alluring Barolo of the highest level. Violets, plums and minerals ring out on the precise, refreshing finish. Hats off to Brovia for another exceptional Barolo.

Good medium red. Ripe, wild nose shows an almost decadent raspberry liqueur quality along with musky tobacco and marzipan notes. Sweet, silky and dense, with an almost roasted ripeness supported by huge underlying structure. This is remarkably rich, full and showy today-atypically open for this early stage, says Elena Brovia-but will surely shut down in bottle. The explosive finish features huge, broad, dusty tannins that arrive late and reach the incisors. More voluminous than the 2006 version: here one really senses the warm site.
