Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières 2011 from Antoine Jobard appears a little dilute on the nose and lacks terroir expression. The palate is slightly resinous on the entry and there appears to be a little botrytis here. Touches of dried honey and spice mark the finish but it fails to really engage.

Bright, pale yellow with green highlights. Complex, bracing aromas of lemon, lime, orange zest and stone accented by a peppery quality. Wound-up and tight on the palate, with the peppery quality accentuated by slightly edgy acidity. This very backward wine, which was lightly chaptalized, shows good intensity but only moderate fruit ripeness.

The 2011 Meursault Genevrières is rich, full-bodied and powerful for the year, with surprising depth in its fruit and fewer of the classic Genevrières minerality. Today, the 2011 is quite dense, so it is possible the wine is also shut down, but my sense is that this will always prove to be a relatively fruit-driven Genevrières, and that is not a bad thing, as it also makes the wine more approachable young.

Some liquorice on the nose and even a little alcohol evident on the palate! Quite harsh acidity. Very embryonic. Very dry and severe. (JR)
