The 2019 Riesling Krettnacher Euchariusberg Kabinett A.P. #12 incorporates not just the same old vines in the long-renowned Gross Schock sector that have informed previous A.P. #12 bottlings, but also fruit from two other parcels, one of them the “Gisela” parcel that also informs their Alte Reben bottling. (A cask filled from three different parcels is unusual chez Weber, but the low yields of 2019 demanded some flexibility in that regard. There is another Euchariusberg, A.P. #13, from a single parcel, but I did not taste it.) On the nose, basil, wet stone, ripe pear and lime anticipate the cool, brightly fruited and infectiously juicy performance that awaits on a glossy but delicate palate. Hints of brown spice add to the appeal of a vibrant and refreshing finish transparent to underlying wet stone. While the fruit for this was marginally higher in must weight than for Kabinetts from other recent Weber vintages, there is no lack of buoyancy or poise, and residual sugar of around 40 grams is perfectly integrated so as to support without generating more than modest sweetness.

The 2019 Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett #13 Athuro is high-precision Riesling at its very best! Very pure, fresh and bright on the very stony nose that also displays white fruit, lemon, subtle nutmeg, leafy and green gooseberry aromas. Very delicate and salty on the palate, this is a pure, round, juicy, highly complex, finessed and elegant, persistently structured and tickling Euchariusberg with great sophistication and endless salinity. This is a fabulous, expressive, tight and terroir-driven Kabinett with 8% alcohol and an almost dramatic finish that asks for all of your patience. The parcel was taken over from Arthur Mangold, owner of the Landhaus Euchariusberg. Tasted in May 2020.
