The tightly wound, slightly rustic 2001 Ruchottes-Chambertin is suffering from reduction (a chemical state wherein the wine lacks oxygen molecules and is denoted by flavors as well as aromas of burnt rubber). Dark fruits, spices, and stones can be found in its medium-bodied, exceptionally long personality. While I have reservations about this wine, it may sort itself out with time. Good full red. Subtly musky aromas of strawberry, raspberry, smoked meat, underbrush, minerals, licorice and smoke. Very intensely flavored and precise but slow to show itself. The red fruit and mineral flavors build slowly and linger impressively on the very long, vibrant aftertaste. Following the recent replanting of about half these vines, this is all from old vines.
(half of this holding was pulled up after the '98 harvest and then replanted; this 2001 is entirely from 60-year-old vines) Bright ruby-red. Sappy, precise aromas of cherry, spices and smoked meat. At once creamy-sweet and complex in the mouth, with intense, highly perfumed flavors of red fruits, minerals and spices. This boasts sneaky old-vines intensity and terrific verve. A firmly structured, youthfully austere wine with lovely lift and superb backbone. A great showing today.
