Tasting notes
2000 was not a heralded vintage in most of Spain, unlike in Bordeaux, but the turn of the century produced a very fine 2000 Único, which, from magnum, showed well, with good acidity. It was even a little closed but without the purity of, say, 2004. It has abundant, slightly dusty tannins and one of Vega Sicilia's signatures: a little volatility that lifts up the wine. It's evolving faster than the 2004, which to me is the benchmark of the decade. It was produced with 93% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and achieved 14% alcohol. 2,685 magnums produced. Artwork Castilviejo.

93% Tinto Fino, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. Hard green pruning so just 20 hl/ha, harvest from 14 October. After fermentation remained in large-capacity wooden vats for 15 months. It then matured for 23 months in new barrels, 15 months in second-use barrels and 24 months in large-capacity wooden vats. Released in 2009. 108,536 bottles, 2,685 magnums, 158 double magnums and five Impériales. From magnum. Looks more youthful than the 2002 though there is evolution at the rim. Light peppermint nose. A little indistinct and awkward. Not as pure and direct as some, with acidity, fruit and tannin still unresolved and unintegrated. The notes are more enthusiastic than I am. A slightly disappointing magnum perhaps? (JR)
Not generally reckoned a great vintage in the way of 2004 and 2005. 2000 called for viticultural and winemaking skill. 40% of the crop was discarded. Untimely rain. Needs more time. Crimson with some evolution at the rim. Not that expressive on the nose. Concentrated and a bit medicinal but marked by quite high acidity and rather awkward tannins. A bit gawky at the moment. Fresh finish. (JR)
