The 2021 Langhe Freisa is a serious wine. Bright acids and veins of tannin give the 2021 tons of energy. Crushed rocks, mint, lavender, spice and rose petal meld into a core of dark red/purplish fruit. I would give this a year or two in the cellar. All of this fruit is from Monrobiolo di Bussia. In my view, it is the most pedigreed of the entry-level offerings.

They used to make two versions of this wine, one ‘nebbiolata’ or still and a traditional Freisa frizzante. Since 2020 it’s made only in the still version, because owing to climate change the potential alcohol went up too much to produce a light, fizzy red. Aged for nine months in oak casks and a year in bottle. Lustrous ruby. Gorgeous, perfumed and at the same time taut with a spicy note. Incredible depth on the nose. Dances over the palate with elegant, fresh and dry blackberry fruit, nervous acidity and fine sandy tannins. (WS)
