Healthy dark red with ruby highlights. Lovely floral, spicy high tones to the aromas of dark cherry and raspberry. In a distinctly ripe style for this bottling, offering sweet, plush flavors of black raspberry, licorice, flowers, crushed rock and bitter chocolate. Still some new oak to be absorbed but this large-scaled Clos Vougeot has the stuffing to support it. Finishes ripely tannic and very long, with palate-saturating richness and captivating savory minerality. The first wine of my morning vertical tasting with the Mugneret sisters and a true breakfast of champions. (13.3% alcohol; 3.5 pH; harvested on September 5; 41 hectoliters per hectare produced; aged in 70% new oak)

The 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a terrific rendition of this routinely stunning cuvée, soaring from the glass with a complex bouquet of red-black fruit, incense, rich soil tones, violets, smoked duck and a touch of menthol. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and multidimensional, with an ample chassis of rich, velvety tannins, a cool core of fruit and effortless balance through the long, penetrating and sapid finish. This Clos Vougeot is a monument in the making.

Full, dark red. Initially mute nose opened to reveal splendidly deep scents of red cherry, spices, smoke, underbrush and salty minerality, with a suggestion of almost liqueur-like ripeness. Massive and hugely rich; in fact, almost too big for the mouth, conveying a strong impression of baby fat. For all its ripeness and power, though, this wine possesses outstanding energy for the vintage. The extraordinarily long, mounting finish leaves the palate and teeth saturated with noble tannins. This great, fully ripe Clos Vougeot is likely to enjoy a very long life in the cellar.

Cask sample. Toasty and black-fruited nose. Long spicy finish and plenty of fruit concentration on the mid palate. Combines fruit intensity with great structural balance – and avoids heaviness – but perhaps doesn't have all the bells and whistles expected from a grand cru. (RH)
