Heady aromas of golden currants steeped in honey and orange blossom. Incredibly fresh and dancing on tiptoe despite the sweetness. Fresh oranges frame kumquats in cinnamon syrup, and gossamer-fine threads of Earl Grey tea weave through the wine bringing angle and more freshness and easing the sweetness into something that’s almost thirst-quenching. A real delight. (TC)

Orange rind, star anise and treacle tart. Supernatural balance of sweetness and acid leave an electrified palate on the finish. Gorgeously long and stately, with the only legitimate gripe being a lack of complexity compared with its grander siblings. Echoes continue long into the finish. (RH)

TA 7.9 g/l, RS 158 g/l. No bottle weighing as I am tasting from a 25 cl sample bottle. Deep gold. Intense with some botrytis evident. Clean as a whistle. Really vibrant and lively. Tastes like health juice. (JR)

The 2017 Tokaji Blue Label 5-Puttonyos is a selection of the finest Aszú berries from across the region. This is the cuvée where I was expecting more on the nose, which seems a little taciturn at the moment and, despite my allowing the sample to aerate, never quite clicks into gear. The palate is a different matter: poised, intense and lightly spiced, with a gorgeous viscous texture. But surprisingly, of the six cuvées that I tasted from Royal Tokaji this vintage, the Blue Label is the one where I wanted more.
