The 1999 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a step up from the 1998. It has a disarming bouquet of honey, yellow flowers, orange pith and a hint of praline. While not intense, there is impressive delineation in situ. The palate is concentrated with a fine bead of acidity, and quite racy in style, with orange zest and lemon peel embroidered through the thick, honeyed fruit on the finish. A little obvious in style, but it does the job. Not long-term, but recommended. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at home.

The 1999 Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey has a well-defined bouquet with clear honey, buttercup, mandarin and a touch of spice – certainly more harmonious than the previous two vintages. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity. There is good weight in the mouth, a little more edge and verve compared to the 1997 and 1998 with a crisp effervescent orange zest and citrus peel finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. This is drinking well now.

Deep orange. Heady, dusty, round and complex. Barley sugar – well bought! Good stuff. (JR)
