Score 95/100 · Drink 2022-2042, Jeb Dunnuck, Jan 2020

Following the 2014, the 2013 Asterisk is more backward and masculine, with lots of chocolaty dark fruits, ground herbs, licorice, and scorched earth. It packs ample fruit as well as structure on the palate, and it’s beautifully balanced. Most 2013s are still in need of additional bottle age, and that’s certainly the case here. Give bottles another 2-3 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2013 Asterisk comes bursting forth with crème de cassis, wild blueberries and black cherries scents with touches of dark chocolate mints, lilacs, black tea and espresso plus wafts of cardamom and cumin. Full-bodied, rich, boldly fruited and oh-so-decadent, it fills the mouth with generous black fruit layers, finishing with a minty lift.

The 2013 Asterisk is dark, powerful, rich and inviting. Black stone fruit, smoke, licorice, spice and torrefaction notes give the wine its distinctive personality. If anything, the 2013 is a very serious second wine that will need time in bottle to shed some of its formidable tannin.

The 2013 Asterisk is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Graphite, lavender, cloves, menthol and black cherries are beautifully sketched throughout. This is an unusually dark Asterisk, partly the reflection of the personality of the year and partly the emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon. Virile and powerful in style, the 2013 is almost too serious for a second wine. It is every bit that good. In 2013, there is no Cabernet Franc in the blend.
