The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru has a very sensual and creamy bouquet with luscious red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, flirting with jamminess but thankfully avoiding that. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is well balanced and more harmonious than its peers, with a fine bead of acidity and a fine-boned finish. This should age with grace and panache and seems like it is putting some distance between itself and Amélie Berthaut’s Les Suchots. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Magnum. Deep crimson. Rather strange overlay reminiscent of a sort of varnish. Lots of astringency and not quite enough charm or fruit? Ticks boxes rather than really impresses. (JR)
The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Petits Monts, a vineyard that is completely worked by hand and horse, has a mineral-driven, almost austere bouquet at first, but it opens up gloriously in the glass. There is real energy here. The palate is very well defined with strawberry pastilles and a touch of blue fruit, tapering a little toward the finish (perhaps due to the cold cellar) but still leaving you with the impression that it will blossom with four or five years in bottle.
