1942 was a very good and famous vintage in many places in Europe, including Rioja and the Ygay estate. The 1942 Castillo Ygay Reserva Especial has more Tempranillo than the previous vintages on record, 70%, and then 13% Mazuelo, 12% Garnacha and 5% Graciano. The wine spent nine months in tank and 479 months in American oak barrels. Even if the label mentions 12.9% alcohol, the analytics show 13.1%, as well as 7.5 grams of acidity with 0.8 grams of acetic acid. It was bottled in July 1983, 41 years after the harvest, one of the longest élevages here. This is young and lively, and it has an earthy profile in line with the 1917 and 1925 but with more finesse, the finest of that profile, with elegance and power. The palate is full and complete, seamless, without fissures, with finesse and power.
