Score 90/100 · Drink 2014-2024, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, May 2011

The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts reveals a pretty, mineral-laced personality. Red cherries, incense and spices are some of the notes that emerge from the glass. High-toned aromas add lift on the finish. This remains a touch compact; with a little more generosity and depth it might merit a higher score. The Beaux Monts is made from two parcels of fairly young vines; 6 and 15 years of age respectively. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. I tasted the following wines with Charles Van Canneyt, Alain Hudelot’s grandson. Van Canneyt showed me a few 2008s before moving into the 2009s. The estate did some chaptalization in 2008. Based on the selection of wines I tasted, that may have robbed some of the 2008s of their vintage character. Vintage 2009 seems to have played more to the estate’s strengths. The estate used 50% new oak for the Grand Crus and 30% for the 1ers. Importer: Atherton Imports, Menlo Park, CA; tel. (650) 328-6639

Pale crimson. Tension and a suggestion of hidden depths on the nose. Firm with lots of beefy fruit in the middle. A bit more like a consommé than a wine..? Attractive nourishment. Burly with sweet fruit on the finish. Transparent expression. No mucking about. No excess sweetness. Quite delicate in fact. Long. (JR)

Pale medium red. Much more reticent on the nose than the Suchots, hinting at red fruits, graphite and menthol. Then juicy and minerally in the mouth; less ripe and plump than the Suchots but more linear and sharply delineated today. Here the tannins are firmer and more visible today, but nicely ripe.
