The 2013 and 2016 vintages represent the best work by consulting enologist Luca D'Attoma during his time at Fattoria le Pupille. He joined the estate in 2012 and left as the 2018s were bottled. The 2013 Saffredi is very fine and elegant, and it offers a bright point of freshness that helps it stand apart from the 2012 and 2011 vintages, which show less overall clarity. This wine vaunts extreme focus instead, and although it does show ample oak and spice definition, the fruit is beautifully presented.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot. The rainy winter was followed by a spring with temperatures below average, which slowed down the initial growth. In mid July temperatures rose significantly, and summer weather was good, without extreme heat spikes. In September, considerable diurnal temperature differences ensured excellent ripening of the grapes. H arvest between 15 September and 15 October. 30,000 bottles produced. Very succulent with juicy fruit and a racy top note. Great for current drinking! Not heavy or concentrated, just perfect for now. Long and beautifully balanced. (JR)

Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a little Petit Verdot. Very deep crimson. Very mellow and convincing Tuscan Bordeaux blend with structure but mellowness. Really very winning indeed. Long and flattering. A little sweeter and more lifted than a classed growth but nothing like as heavy as a typical Napa Cab. Brava! (JR)

Beautiful, lustrous ruby! More than a whiff of bordeaux, but more in the cherry spectrum and with a leafy tobacco note. Firm, grainy tannins framing youthful, compact fruit, but this is certainly not shy. Could stand up to medium-term cellaring, but already quite irresistible. (WS)
