A floral, plummy nose and attractive cassis. Nice full, juicy palate. clean and fresh and with nice length and round tannin. Simple but good.

Sweet, vanilla-laced cassis. Big, rich, spicy. A burly, honest wine – but even with the stay-away-from-me tannins, it has reasonable harmony and promise, though it needs to flesh out in the middle. (JH)
Another sleeper of the vintage, this excellent effort from the Gardinier family reveals a dense ruby/purple color along with a sweet perfume of mulberries, black cherries and black currants. An absence of herbaceousness gives the wine an attractive plump, fruit-driven mouthfeel with earth, light tannin and structure. Enjoy this excellent 2011 over the next 7-8 years.
Leafy, just-ripe cassis. Smoothed tannins, gentle in the mouth but a little abrupt on the finish. There's some power here but it finishes fresh. (JH)

With 70 hectares under vine, Ch. Phélan Ségur sits on the eastern side of Saint-Estèphe – neighbouring Montrose and Calon Ségur. Owned by Philippe van de Vyvere since 2017, its gravel soils produce typically firm wines.
