Aromas of smoky plums, raw cocoa, strawberries, herbs and a subtle framing of new oak introduce the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots-du-Milieu, which is medium to full-bodied, ample and open-knit, with light back-end tannin and a profile that's strongly marked by whole-cluster vinification.

A discreet application of wood frames nicely spiced and earth-inflected essence of red berry fruit aromas. The rich, caressing and lightly stony middle weight flavors deliver much better depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finale. This is a Santenots that is largely built on its fruit but with that noted, there is still sufficient structure to warrant 5 to 8 years of cellaring.
