Castelnuovo Berardenga. Unfiltered. Just mid ruby. Brooding and with hints of stalks and mace and iron. Needs to take a really deep breath. Energetic and concentrated sweet-sour cherry fruit rolling over the palate. Juicy and succulent and still conveying a sense of lightness on the palate, although this has 14.5%. Bags of delicious chewy tannins. (WS)

The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardo is laced with the essence of black cherry, plum, dried flowers, game, spice and leather. Surprisingly light for a Castelnuovo Berardenga Riserva, the 2016 is drinking quite well today. This is a decidedly restrained wine for the southern part of the appellation. There is good acidity, but less fruit and overall depth than I expected. Even so, all the elements are nicely put together.

Castelnuovo Berardenga. 100% Sangiovese. Just mid ruby. Pretty, lively cherry and raspberry nose with just a hint of cardamom pod. A sour-cherry palate stitched together by ripe, grainy tannins. Very long, youthful and juicy. (WS)

This is a full and generous expression with dark fruit, dried blackberry, spice and lightly toasted nut. The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardo is a classic mid-weight Tuscan red with lots of pretty freshness and firm tannins that are not at all astringent or bitter. I'm finding that some of these wines from Castello di Bossi are a bit clipped, hallow or short on the finish. That is the case here. Open it alongside an amatriciana with plenty of shaved pecorino. Some 30,000 bottles were made.
