Score 94/100 · Drink 2006-2018, Pierre Rovani, Oct 2002

Fresh citrus fruits, spring onions, and spices are found in the nose of the 2001 Riesling Spatlese Oberhauser Brucke. A medium-bodied, complex, highly expressive wine, its satin-textured core reveals perfumed white fruits, green onions, minerals, and verbena in its rich yet crystalline character. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018. Helmut Donnhoff approached the 2001 vintage much as Reggie Jackson would have reacted to facing a fast ball down the middle thrown by a Junior Varsity pitcher in the bottom of the ninth of the last game of the World Series. Donnhoff hit a towering, grand slam home run of majestic proportions. His 2001s are extraordinary. Importer: Terry Theise Estate Selections, imported by Michael Skurnik Wines, Inc., Syosset, NY; tel. Full, tropical fruit nose with even a hint of coconut. Full-on rumbustious impact from this wine that is virtually of Auslese ripeness though is far from subtle. (JR)
