Sage- and basil-laced lime, honeydew and cassis dominate the nose and palate. The sheer succulence of ripe fruit here is accompanied by an animating, consummately refreshing influence of ripe acids. The superbly sustained, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish features a glowing, cooling, lightly sizzling combination of green herbs, lime zest and crystalline stone impingement along with the richness and animation that are strikingly evident in so many of Nigl’s 2016s.

Screwcap. A rocky plateau close to the River Krems. Pure, tight stony citrus aroma. Intense, pure bright lemon fruit. Still very primary in its lively crisp fruit. On the palate, very fruity again, more fruit than mineral but the texture is dry and stony. (JH)

Martin Nigl Junior's bright, citrus colored 2016 Ried Hochäcker 1ÖTW Riesling, tasted as a tank sample in July 2017, opens with an intense and concentrated yet fresh and complex nose of ripe and very ripe Riesling berries intermixed with citrus aromas, stone dust and a touch of honey. Coming from an elevated plateau above the steep vineyards of Senftenberg, where a good humus layer covers the mica schist, this is a full-bodied, pure, finessed, fresh and elegant Riesling. It has dense, ripe and lush fruit, piquant acidity and a long, intense, compact finish with dusty tannins and good salinity. This is a long-distance runner that should be kept in the cellar for at least four or five years. Very promising!
